Many people in G land swear by G5RVs. They are very much a compromise. I
would always prefer to go for the 5RV but feed it with open wire or ribbon
all the way and get rid of the lossy coax and mis match. The 5RV then
becomes our old favourite, the doublet. More or less any gauge wire will do,
the thicker the better, and you can make your own ladder line from the same
wire. Commercially made ribbon is expensive, but cheaper than buying a ready
made 5RV. Read HF Antennas for all locations by Les Moxon G6XN and available
from the RSGB in the UK. There is a lot of information about balanced
feedlines etc.
