After living in the mountains for a few years we moved to Capitola next =
to
Aptos. Yes, the bay is magic, and I loved going down to Big Sur for a =
few
days - eating at Nepenthe on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific.

The problem with the mountains -especially the San Lorenzo valley where =
we
lived, is that it faces south looking out onto the Monterey Bay. So when =
a
big wet, tropical storm comes in, it gets channeled into that space and
dumps and dumps and dumps. In the Big Storm of Jan 2 '81, several =
tropical
storms came through all at once, followed by a very wet one.=20

The rest of the coastal area away from the hills isn't so bad. But I =
know
that above Aptos (several miles north on the slopes of the mountains =
there)
is a 10 mile wide "slide zone" where new homes can't be built because it =
is
a gigantic slide waiting to happen.=20
=20
We ended up in Oregon because we couldn't afford to work and live there. =
My
Hat's off to Eric and Wayne too. But then again, we love it in the =
forests
of N.W. Oregon and we don't need nearly as much cash <G>.

I've lived/worked in Sunnyvale and often went over the 'mountains' to =
the
coast to escape the fast paced hi tech environment of Silicon Valley. =
I've
had the good fortune to travel a lot around the US and the coastal area
between Santa Cruz and Big Sur is some of the most breathtaking, =
beautiful
country I've seen within the confines of these great United States (and =
that
includes Alaska & Hawaii).
=20
In that regard the Elecraft crew (etc.) is very blessed... Natural =
dangers
or not, I'd give anything if I could live, work in the Santa
Cruz/Aptos/Monterey/Carmel area (and afford it ;)
