You're making the assumption that gear made for the government or military
must be superior.
Think about this: The government/military gives the contract to build
equipment for them to the lowest bidder. What does that mean. Corners cut.
I know cause I use to work with much of this gear in the field and it broke
down allot.
It does not matter how many engineers you have working on something. It
matters how much dedication and heart is put into the project.
I think its safe to say the Elecraft gang have their heart into everything
they do. I don't think you can say the same about the other manufacturers.
So what if the Orion is better or worse. It's not the same thing! The
Orion is a multi thousand dollar rig. It's also a surface mount nightmare.
Try fixing that rig when you have a problem. At least with the K2, you can
practically fix anything that comes up yourself and it's constantly being
improved.
You can update your K2 as much or as less as you like.
