This is one of those FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions). I'm inclined to 
think the web site and the manuals need to have a statement in big, bold 
letters saying in effect "build item following the manual. Once the item 
has been built per the manual and has been proven to be in working order, 
then you may consider any modifications which may exist for the item".

Trying to save time by incorporating changes to a unit as you build it can 
only get you in to trouble later on. If the item built with mods doesn't 
work, any request for help will probably be accompanied with the statement 
to removed the mods first to make certain the mods aren't the cause of the 
problems.
