[Elecraft] poor audio and odd alc on K2 SSB

Greetings
making slow progress with SSB on my K2. Found I'd made a mistake with RP5
and RP3 and had them swopped. Is it likely that I may have damaged any of
the ICs?.
Also found an era in  T1 & T2 and rewound them both.
I am using a Pye PMR mike, which is very toppy anyway, but my audio reports
are that it sounds restricted. The ALC is all over the place and seems to be
over limiting. Some peaks of speech are hitting about 8 watts, (carrier set
at 8 watts) ie, when I whistle. The average level is way down about 2 watts.
My 706 with compression on gives an average of about 5 watts for an
equivalent carrier power. Any ideas?. I have tried shifting the BFO
frequency, but that does not stabilise the ALC, which seems to be knocking
back the power too far.
