I put up a new antenna over the weekend and had fun listening on 17, 20, 30, and 40 meters yesterday during the early afternoon (PST). 17 meters had very little
activity on CW but was packed with phone. 20 meters had a lot of activity on CW but just a little on phone (did hear some folks in Europe though). 30 meters had a
little activity on CW but since the antenna is a G5RV I don't expect to get much distance on this band. 40 meters had a little activity on CW and phone but I was
listening during the daylight when 40 meters is mostly local (within a 1000 miles or so) so I didn't expect much activity. Just had a great contact into OK (from Oregon)
on 20 meters at 14052 kHz. Only a little noise and the signals were a bit light but the copy was quite acceptable. All this with a G5RV at 45 feet with the main lobes
oriented east-west. I am not sure if I would have made the contact with OK today with voice but CW worked well. I received a 519 and gave a 449. He uses a Force
12 Yagi-Uda so he's got some gain on me. The motorboat noise did wipe out a few dits here and there so I needed context to make sense of the copy.
