QRP stations were given a huge advantage in the scoring structure of the
contest. I'm sure many K2/100s were run at QRP levels just to take advantage
of the higher points per QSO. Unfortunately, that means fewer QSOs for
everyone.

Yes, as it stands, the EQP is more of an "operating event" like Field Day,
than it is a real contest (despite having the name of a real contest.)
