Hi Gary - Think the draft of this response got sent to you directly - =
sorry - here's the "finished" version.
I've had no problems working dx etc with the qrp K2 on ssb. No =
particular audio processing other than that built in to the K2 (set =
compression on 2). I do use a D-104 (subject of another post that I =
just sent to the reflector) - managed to work 175 countries in a just a =
couple of weeks on ssb (need to send in for the Elecraft CC award one of =
these days!!) running 5 - 10 watts and a simple 20 meter delta loop =
with the bottom at 35 feet and the top at 55 feet - BTW: the loop also =
works really well on 10 meters! Lots of the reports of: "can't believe =
you're running only . . . . must have a great antenna . . . etc etc"! =
Actually, to me, propagation is the great "equalizer" !
And - yes, of course, to he honest, it was a lot easier to "bust a =
pile up" when I had the Signal One driving the Alpha running at 1.5kw (+ =
or - ) and was using stacked 20 meter monobanders with the top antenna =
at 125 feet and a 360 degree uninterrupted downward slope to the =
horizon.!
Re: Is "QRP" 5 watts or 10 watts? Good question! I suppose it =
ultimately depends on how it is defined by whomever is issuing the =
"award" or writing the "rules" for a particular contest. In 47 years of =
playing radio I've read a lot of "rules" !
I have built the KPA-100 and it adds a very nice capability to the K2 - =
it's there if you want to use it.
My advice for what it's worth - get off the fence - build the KPA-100 - =
you can always turn the power control down !

Subject: [Elecraft] Speech Processors for K2 Heil Microphone -- Is 10W =
SSB
considered QRP?
> Dear OM's and YL's: It's been a while since speech processors were
discussed in reference to the K2. My concern is that in QRP mode there
won't be enough "talk power" to run SSB on 10W effectively. In other =
words,
has anyone out there using that power level, found that any mike =
pre-amps
have helped out (aside from the K2 circuitry itself)? The second =
question
is to put to rest my doubts about the SSB QRP max watts once and for =
all!
IS IT FIVE OR TEN WATTS SSB? And, regardless of the max watts, is there =
or
has there been any controversy over the limit? I seem to be moving =
toward
QRP with each passing day, even though Ihave the KPA-100 kit ready to
assemble. I am so indecisive. 73's,Gary FreemanWB6HEG
