It's amazing how things like that happen. When first checking my then
partially built K2 (I think it was the first stage tests of the control,
front panel and rf boards, one of the tests involved checking to see if
the keyer worked. I plugged in my iambic paddle. Got dashes but no
dots. I checked the paddle wiring. I checked the paddle plug. I
checked the jack wiring on the K2. Nothing. As I have done on too many
past occasions, I began to believe that Marconi has been wrong all of
these years and wireless just couldn't work. Then I remembered
something from the owner's manual - - I had actually read it before
beginning construction! There is a menu setting for changing from a
paddle to a hand key. Guess where it had been set. After changing the
setting to paddle, the keyer sprang to full life. Sometimes it's the
little things that will rise up and bite you.

I was all set to do the modification suggested by elecraft to get the
Side Tone audio working. I must have read over this email at least 2
dozen times. I finally re-read the part about editing St L and pressing
DISPLAY to switch from U6-25 to U8-4 With the jewelers screwdriver in
hand, ready to slice the trace... a little dimly lit lightbulb finally
lit up...
What if it is set to U8-4??
Just for kicks... I checked it out. Sure enough, it was. I switched it
to U6-25... voila! Side Tone!! Without even touching a soldering iron to
it, its fixed :)
I guess that didn't really set in because I thought it might have been
something that appeared in the menu after you cut the trace. In the
volunteer fire department we have a saying, "Try before you pry". In
this case, it worked. My K2 has side tone and now I can operate CW
(yay!) Thanks again for all your help.
Best regards and 73
