[Elecraft] KPA100 - K2 ribbon cable

I am building my KPA100 now and came to the point where I needed to
remove a pin from the plugs on the K2 control board and the KPA100 and
insert cable pin keying inserts at each end of the ribbon cable.
Unfortunately, my kit was missing the keying inserts. I e-mailed
Elecraft and they are sending me two.
However, I decided to proceed with the resistance and voltage tests and
the other tests which use the K2 display. I did so by carefully
plugging in the cable to be certain I had it correctly oriented. I'm
happy to say, the partially built KPA100 passed all tests. It neither
smoked, nor sizzled nor exploded! (I have had that interesting
experience during certain past homebrew projects I and my insurance
company would rather forget).
Now I'm beginning to wonder if it might be OK to just not remove the
pins or use the keying inserts. The instructions imply that it would be
OK. That would avoid doing violence to the two plugs. And maybe some
day there will be a use for the 8T line.
Any thoughts?
