Another *excellent* reference is James Miller's "The Shape of Bits to Come."
While it deals with satellite and packet data transmission, the issues and
theory are the same, whether the bits are data from a TNC or dits and dahs
from a cw keyer - it is still binary data communications.

down you'll see it. Be *certain* to download and view the "figures with
captions" link as well.  The text is very mysterious without the
illustrations, and the illustrations give way to an "Aha!" moment, even
without the text :-)

Figures 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9 show what can be done, getting progressively
better with slightly more elaborate filtering...  Don't worry about the
"eye", just look at the bit (think of it as a dit) and the spectrum parts of
the drawings.
