The hams you contact on CW have their receivers tuned with your signal
centered in the passband of their receiver's filter. Even the clickiest
signals can sound good with a clear tone in this regard. In fact, the
harder the keying, the better the note may sound when so tuned. But the
harder the keying (i.e., the steeper the rise/fall time of the CW
waveform), the greater the possibility that the signal has clicks (which
you won't hear until you tune your receiver so that the signal is outside
of the passband of your filter).
