I second the above statement. I've had Win98se up/running for years now =
and I can count the times on one hand I've had to boot up in safe mode =
(etc.) due to any instability. And that was usually because I screwed up =
some SW installation.
Win98SE is now a mature, stable OS. In fact, I just built a high end =
'puter for a friend and recommended Win98SE (over XP) due to just this =
stability/reliability.
If your Win98se is that unstable there is clearly something wrong with =
the installation, not the actual O/S itself. That is, as long as it =
isn't one of those proprietary 'for this PC only' type Win98's that some =
vendors have to supply with their systems.
I'd suggest you think about a data backup/reformat/re-install/update to =
current version approach before worrying about needing to update to =
anything new.
Finally, I am a BIG believer of Norton SystemWorks and highly recommend =
it for any Windows user. Aside from its excellent virus protection, NSW =
also has utilities to improve performance and most importantly, find/fix =
subtle timebombs created by ill behaved applications.
