Bruce,
If the ground connections are made at the bottom of the crystal, there will
be no interference.

You are correct, the SSB instructions were written before the change to
double ground at the bottom of the crystals - previously the ground wire was
soldered to the top of the crystal cans and will cause interference in that
position.
