Until about 20 years ago, when we moved to a diferent call district, we
had to apply for a new callsign relevent to the new district.  Before
then, you could always determine which part of the USA a K or W ham was
in.  Now, however, if we move to a different call area, we can retain our
old call sign and not even have to sign "portable".

That's why you now hear east coast K6s and west coast W1s and W9s in
Texas.
