Things must be really slow; I'm replying to my own message!

I just found that Lumex makes a backlight that may fit:

SSB-DL3117xxx -- xxx being color.

30.5 x 17mm edge lit backlight panel, available in several colors
including green. So if someone wanted to order the transreflective
Varitronix display, and then the Lumex backlight, it may actually work!
You'd have to bend the leads (since there are no board holes for a 
backlight) and run power/dropping resistor. Digikey carries Lumex
and Varitronix; maybe they can special-order.
