You know, the ARRL Handbook for Radio Amatuers is likely one the best 
investments one can make. Each is chock full of useful information, 
projects, circuits, antennas and construction data.

And it doesn't change terribly much from year to year, so you only have 
to buy one every 5-10 years to stay current. I have handbooks from 1975, 
1986, 1991 and 2000. I wouldn't part with any of them.
