If my math is right, you'd need a 36 MHz xtal to cover the low end of 10 (K1 het xtals all seem to be 8 MHz higher than the lower band edge). Subtract 3.085 from 36.000 and you get 32.915, which is 4.915 above 28. 

You'd also need a filter that would pass 32.915-33.?? while adequately rejecting the sum product (39.085) and all the other nasties coming out of the premixer.

Also, even with the wide tuning range, you'd only get 10% of 10 meters.

18 MHZ rock doubling or 12 MHz rock tripling are two options, but that takes additional parts.

Go down the K1 mod road long enough, and you wind up designing a K2. I would not be surprised if that's what Wayne and Eric did. One good idea leads to another and pretty soon....
