W8RIK and N8FYD have successfully operated the K2, with full control, via
the Internet using KE6D's K2Anywhere software (a network version of his K2S
program). It worked flawlessly. Visit Dan's web site,
http://www.qsl.net/ke6d/, for additonal
details. You can download K2Anywhere from this site. Note that it is still
Beta Software.
W8RIK and N8FYD were both running WIN98 and connected to the Internet via
cable modems. Our attempts to go through a router were not successful. This
will probably require setting the K2Server PC to a static IP address,
exposing it to the Internet using DMZ hosting, and disabling some of the
routers default filtering. A work in progress.
In our tests, the K2/100 and K2Server were at W8RIK's QTH. N8FYD connected
to the K2Server from his location using K2Anywhere. N8FYD had full control
of the K2. We used NetMeeting to stream audio. Folks, it was awesome!
For those who want to try, a few thoughts to augment Dan's installation
notes:
1. Connect directly to your cable/DSL modem and disable any firewall
software.
2. Get your IP address and write it down. You can use "winipcfg" (Windows
98) to see your IP address. Recommend that you do "release all" and "renew
all" and then record the IP address.
3. Configure Naming Service with this IP address and port 10000. Modify the
Naming_Service.exe command line to look like this:
Naming-Service.exe -ORBEndPoint iiop://xx.xx.xx.xx:10000
Where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address obtained in step 2.
4. You do not need to ammend the command lines for K2Sever or K2Anywhere.
You must, however, edit the system configuration parameters of both
programs to show the IP Address of the K2Server PC (obtained in step 2) as
the "Name Server Host". The "Name Server Port" should be 10000.
5. The server PC connects to the K2 I/O port, runs Naming_Service, and runs
K2Server.
6. The remote (client) station simply runs K2Anywhere.
7. There are several ways to stream audio. We used Netmeeting.
KE6D has done a great job with K2S, K2Sever, & K2Anywhere. It is a work in
progress, it is a labor of love, and it is freeware/charityware. If you
enjoy it, give a Dan some words of encouragement and donate a few $$ to your
favorite charity.
