You don't even need to "waste" cores left over from building your K2... I've
salvaged cores from old PCs (power supplies and on-off switch wiring)! 4:1
baluns are described in almost every ARRL handbook, just make two and test
them "back to back" across all the HF bands into a power meter/load using a
reasonable amount of power. There will be nasty currents and voltages at
times when running open line/ribbon fed antennas - the cores need to handle
that without saturating.
