Well, it's NOT normal, Jack!
You didn't way how new yours is, but if you are just building it I
suspect it's new and so has the AGC threshold pot installed. It sounds
like the AGC is doing something weird, and since the threshold is
adjustable on newer K2's than I have, I'd double check that first. What
you describe is an over-aggressive AGC action!

Performing Tests at the Phase II completion point of the RF board
construction.
All went well with one exception.
Noticed that when rotating the RF Gain control clockwise from minimum
setting, a received 40 meter signal strength increases to a maximum at
approximately the 3/4 clockwise rotation point. Turning the GAIN further
clockwise toward the maximum position actually decreased the signal
loudness substantially as well as moving the bargraph segment
illumination to the extreme left-hand position.
Is this normal or does it indicate a problem possibly in the AGC
circuit?
