Yes, you need it.  It goes around the OUTSIDE of the knob.  Actually, I 
got an FT100 knob and ring and ended up putting the ring around the 
stock K2 knob.  It's heavier than the FT100 knob, and in my case the 
FT100 knob had a slight wobble.  I like it better this way.
