And tomorrow it might work better the other way around.
The Handbooks show it conventionally with the center of coax to higher part
of a sloping dipole, but propagation may vary signals more than you can tell
by only two contacts.
That's what makes antennas so much fun!   You can try something else easily
but should give all antennas a fair shake of some months of use before
reaching conclusions.
Performance of any antenna at HF can be seen to vary over a 15 to 20 minute
cycle due to propagation effects.
