I have hesitated in responding to this OT message as I have been waitng for a moderator to say something.....<smile>
However, now I can't hold back anymore because someone wrote about the 44 foot long dipole discussed by W4RNL at http://www.cebik.com/aledz.html. This website is required reading for all those who wish to mate the world's greatest transceivers (Elecraft...but you already know that) with a best-of-breed antenna.
I built one of these 44' foot long doublets and have it hanging vertically from a 60 foot tall tree in my back yard. I feed it with 300 ohm twin lead. It works very well and appears to have a lower angle of radiation then my 88' foot long doublet fed with 450 ohm ladder line (also from the W4RNL website). I tested these antenna against each other and find that the vertical dipole works better for DX and seems to have a stronger ground wave too. I have the feedline on the vertical dipole perpendicular to the antenna for about 30 feet.
Trivia. Did you know that WWV and WWVH uses vertical dipoles on 15 and 20 MHz? The hidden message here may be that when the government was looking for an antenna design that would blanket the USA and beyond, they chose a vertical dipole. Interesting. Go here and take a look at their antennas:

I'd love to have these antennas in my backyard. My K-1's deserves antennas like these!
Whew! Now I feel better! <smile>

Chuck,
You say that you will cut the antenna for 66 ft (33/leg) because you want to
use it on 40 meters. That makes sense but then you go one to say that you
want to use is on other bands. I expect that 15 meters will work fine but
the others may not work as well as you might like.
I am inclined to do the same thing, and wrestling with feeding options,
except that I will cut the length to 44 ft (22/leg) in accordance with the
document produced by W4RNL. Take a look at:
http://www.cebik.com/aledz.html
Reed the entire document before you make a final decision. It won't take
too long.
This is my plan. Good luck to you.

Fran
