Dave,
I work as the Service Manager for a company that sells high end
professional photographic equipment. Everyday I repair studio strobes
down to the component level.
I agree with Don, if you feel you MUST clean your boards, use 99%
isopropyl alcohol. Rubbing alcohol and denatured alcohol contain
impurities which can actually be conductive! Additionally, I used to
have a guy working for me who was a 20 year man in the Navy, a master
chief who worked on radar and IFF systems. The only circuit board
cleaner the Navy allows is 99% isopropyl.
Normally, I don't feel the need to clean circuit boards, the little flux
splashes won't hurt anything; and with the case on, no one is going to
see them anyway. Still, if you feel so strongly about it that you're
going to do it anyway, use the good stuff.
