Another hint:

When winding toroids, I found the first turn or two doesn't end up as 
tight as the rest, due to the fact there isn't enough friction from 
those 1 or 2 turns to keep the wire taut. So I always wind 2 more turns 
than called for, then unwind the first 2 which weren't tight. The length 
of the wire specified in the instructions is always long enough to do 
this. Of course, in any case, count the final number of turns, to make 
sure you end up with the right number. FWIW.
