Bob's comments about using enough solder to be able to see the finished
solder joint are excellent from an inspection standpoint, but there's a =
real
danger in putting too much solder on some components that is independent =
of
the heat.

IC sockets are very EASY to fill with solder. It will "wick" right up =
into
the socket and coat the spring leaf where the IC goes in. The only =
solution
is to replace the socket.

In the past a LOT of builders traced low gain or non-working rigs to =
putting
too much solder on the crystal leads. The crystals MUST be sitting down
against the board. The solder wicks through the hole, makes a tiny =
puddle
under the crystal where it can't be seen, and shorts the signal to =
ground at
the crystal case.=20

In all things, moderation... including solder. In general, the less the
better.=20
