If you are going to the beach, a vertical is the best DX antenna.  You can
take along sections to screw together to make a passive director or
reflector, and increase the gain of the vertical alone.

Installed on the beach within 50 feet of the water, it will have ideal
reflector under it, and give a great account of itself on ground wave out to
100 miles or more, and will have great angle of take off for skywave DX
work.

Have done that, and the passive element added 1/8 wave behind the driven
antenna really does increase your signal by X2.  Can do the above with multi
band verticals as my experiment was done with the Force 12 5 band Sigma
vertical.
