I have tried it and removed it again, it makes the keying a bit more
thumpy. On the other hand it is very easy to experiment with, just leave
the 3.3 M there and add a 1 Meg in parallel any time later.

I have seen a few references to this mod lately, but no justification
for it. Can anyone explain?

This is a mod which is easier to do during assembly than afterwards. It
involves replacment of a number of capacitors. I haven't done it myself,
but it seems that there is some consensus for the 2.5 kHz variant.
