Phil is correct, under some conditions, a less than theoretical height for a
horizontal antenna will still work well.
For some applications, you do not want the horizontal as high as normal for
working DX. For example, for Field Day, you can do fine with a Horizontal
Loop of one wave or greater on the lowest band, like 160m, and then use it
for both low angle and high angle work to most all sections in FD on the
higher bands with gain.
Our 4th place in club class last year and high places in past years, was
with loops only 20 feet above earth; but their sizes were large, 849 ft for
the large one, and two "little" ones of 660 feet and 330 feet. The 330 was
a bang up performer on 40m as the band lengthened in the afternoon. The 660
cleaned up on 10 when a rotatable beam sounded like the band was dead, and
then was used on 15 and 80m with very good returns as well.
How did we arrive at 20 feet? We had an extension ladder that would only
allow me to reach that high!
