Any time you are using an unbalanced antenna, earth ground is part of the
antenna system.
You want a low loss ground for best performance. You wouldn't want losses
in any other part of the antenna system, would you? :-)
If the antenna is voltage fed, rather than current fed, the quality of the
ground isn't
such a serious issue, as there will be less current flow at the ground
connection.
However, if you are feeding a wire a quarter wave long, you will have high
ground current
flow at the ground conenction, so low losses are important.
In general, house wiring does not consitute a good rf ground, and shouldn't
be relied on.
Good luck and 73

Subject: [Elecraft] Antenna for K1/K1-4+KAT1

Hi Guys, I'm hoping to get a 125 feet long wire up in the garden at about
30 feet off ground. Gonna match it with KAT1 ATU. K1-4 is 40/30/20/15m. How
important is it to use ground radials. Also, do I need a separate RF earth
at only 5W QRP? (TVI??). K1 ground will be connected to mains power earth
via power supply. The mains power earth to house is via u/g cable (steel
armour in contact with ground) so will be a good connection to mass of
earth.

I can put some copper in the ground if necessary for separate RF earth but
don't want to make work for myself if I don't need to since I'm only using
5W CW.

Any thoughts?
