[Elecraft] Question - Signal Oscillator

Hi all and thanks in advance for help you might offer,

  I am trying to build the signal oscilator that is shown in the
troubleshooting section of the K2 manual.  I'd like to trace the signal from
the antenna to the speaker.  I don't think anything is wrong with the
receiver I just would like to learn a bit about the rig.

  Anyway, I can't get any output from the xtal.  I am using an old (several
years) 10MHz crystal that I think I bought through NORCAL a while back.  I
am getting a few volts going in to the xtal but zero coming out.  Does this
suggest that I have a bad xtal and should try a different one?  As an aside,
I have, but haven't yet built the Elecraft ssb unit, can I use one of those
xtals to see if this is the problem?
