Fred,
Check to be certain that your voltage is not dropping from your power supply
(battery discharged or power supply failing???).  Lower voltage often
requires more current to maintain the same power.  The power supply is
driving something more complex than a simple resistor, so the logical
application of Ohms law does not apply.
