[Elecraft] RE: K2 Frequency Alignment

Okay, so Ron's sample group uncovered a problem with using WWV at 10MHz as a
frequency standard. Now I know why I had problems last night.

Too bad 20MHz is not as useful as it should be. That would be best.

Now for my thoughts on the accuracy of things:

1. WWV at 10MHz is the closest standard in the US to any ham band, it
should therefore be the most accurate of any of the WWV signals on a K2
dial.

2. The fact that the dial may have extra error at 20MHz has no effect upon
the accuracy of the calibration method. That's right NONE! The reason is
that the first step is to tune the receiver to hear the 20MHz transmission
exactly. This is done regardless of what the K2 dial says and therefore
regardless of how accurately the K2 can set such a frequency. The accuracy
is solely based upon how well you zero beat WWV +/- the error of the 10Hz
step on the dial. That means that you should be less than 10Hz off
frequence (assuming perfect stability).

The 20MHz signal would also be better because it would hear any error in
4MHz amplified by a factor of 4.

Note that I an sure I am correct only if I actually understand the workings
of the K2 and this procedure correctly. This means that there is plenty of
room for me to be wrong, but I'll need an explaination.

73 to all,
Fran
