Hello OM,
I agree with your thought, but please allow me to tell you and the readers
of this Reflector a story of a very famous English model engineer, active
before, during and after the second World War.
The alias of this person was "LBSC", and he paved the way for many thousands
of people to build a working miniature steam locomotive, with the majority
of the builders having very few resources. In fact, most of the earlier
models were primarily buildt on the kitchen table-top.
At one point in his weekly contributions for the "Model Engineer" magazine,
LBSC or "Curly" described the setting of the valve gear for a model
locomotive. He told the builders that a certain measurement should be the
same as the "thickness of a tramticket". In the correspondence section of
the magazine, not unlike our Reflector, a very lively discussion ensued.
Point was that the majority of the builders didn't own the expensive
mechanical measuring equipment, but most did have a tramticket, which was
reasonably consistent in thickness.
Another analogy with Elecraft was that Curly designed his locomotives with
practical and good steaming boilers, aka the famous front-end of the K1 and
K2, and he designed the loco's in such a way that amateurs would be able to
build them, aka the Elecraft manual and perfect kit of parts.
As for me, I received an old fashioned training in electronics, before the
days of computers that is, and at that time I had access to very good
instruments. When I started on my K2 kit however, I only owned a DVM, and my
K's work the same nonetheless.
LBSC or "Curly" did make some deveations from perfect mechanical engineering
to allow a lot of builders to succesfully complete their model steam
locomotives. It could well be that Wayne and Eric made some too, but I do
know that I own two wonderfull transceivers, and if you doubt, take a look
at the extensive tests performed on the Elecraft rigs.
