How about a multi-meter? There good for all sorts of troubleshooting that you can't accomplish with a couple of LEDs :-)

Another issue, current draw. If you have two LEDs drawing 10mA each that's an additional continuous current draw of 20mA in a rig that only needs about 120mA for its receiver. Thats a 16% increase in current to light a couple of LEDs that are only needed occassionally. Now you need a way to turn them on and off in order to keep with the QRP theme.
