As one who not only installed the BFO and temperature
compensation mods, but also measured the results here are my results.
The BFO mod resulted in .4 ppm per degree C drift this was better than
half of previous results. The temperature compensated PLL can be
trimmed to almost 0 drift by following the procedures in the
instructions however since the BFO drifts more than the PLL I chose to
let the PLL compensate for the BFO drift on the highest, the 10meter
band. On the lower bands this causes more drift than otherwise so I
only partly compensated on 10 meters. Overall drift now never exceeds
40hz cold to about a 20 C rise. In fact I caused the TX to shut off
which seems to have caused no harm afterward.
The instructions say to use 10watts continuous, however if you
look at the specs for a barefoot K-2 it's rated at 5 watts continuous.
so 10 watts gets it really hot most likely not a good idea.
The PLL mod is truly a wonder in it's elegance. With the BFOmod
the K2 is really stable. The only improvement I could think of is to
compensate the BFO in a like manner. You really ought to do this mod
even if you think you don't need it. =20
