Hi, Bill,
You need not be concerned about mods for the K2. IMHO, the four most
important previous mods are now included in all K2 kits (not as mods, but
part of the actual construction). The four mods I deem as important are:
1) The SSB "flattening" mod.
2) The BFO temperature drift mod.
3) The PLL temperature drift mod.
4) The AF gain control mod.
There may be other previous mods that are also now included in new K2s.
There are some "mods" which simply are a change to a component's value to
make your particular K2 perform better. These are not included in new K2
kits because your K2 may not need a different component value. Three of
them I did to my K2 are:
1) Resistor change to increase mike audio.
2) Resistor change to correct AGC action (this is now a pot in new K2s).
3) Resistor change to eliminate small power output fluctuations (needed
to keep drive stable to my linear).
All mods for the K2, whether Elecraft-approved or not, are
well-documented on one of the Elecrafters' Web sites. I've forgotten his
callsign, but he is Norwegian (with an LA prefix). Perhaps someone else
can fill you in on this.
When you build your K2 and try it out, chances are that you'll trash that
nasty Orion.
