K2 # 3547 is completely done. KPA100, KAT100, KSB2, K160RX and KDSP2 are
all up and running. I just did the DSP today--what an AMAZING
difference. I can't believe how well the filtering works. I showed it
to a few of my buddies here and now they all want to build K2's! To the
guys at Elecraft--I know you're reading this--a job VERY well done. I
couldn't have had more fun building the rig. Not to mention that you
have the best customer service ever!
On an unrelated note, I am leaving for South America in 6 days and am
becoming preoccupied with how I am going to carry the rig through
customs. (Sorry, this is not a technical question.) I'm all set in
terms of the mechanics of it--I have a padded backpack and all that
stuff. It's the paperwork and immigration officials that have me
worried. I'm going to HC land first, and although I won't get my
reciprocal license until I'm in Quito I do have an IARP and will have the
Ecuadorian consulate notarize my FCC license. What I am really concerned
about is the possibility that I might run into some junior level customs
officials who are not up on their ham radio and for whatever reason think
I am suspicious. Any thoughts from people who have already carried their
rigs internationally on how to best get through customs checkpoints?
Should I proactively open up the rig and present my paperwork, or just
walk through and hope they don't pick me out of the line? Also, should I
bring the gel cell battery (sealed) in my carry on or check it through?
Any advice would be appreciated.
