Unless they're extended characters (probably are), I'd be surprised if it couldn't be convinced to work with a braille display if you, say, had it set up to be able to switch quickly between the tuning display and where you'd get text. Even better if you can actually tell it to just use characters available to a particular terminal, or something. This actually might work pretty well for him. (Wish I had a braille display myself. It's on the list...LOL)
