hey - FWIW, the problem I started out this thread with happened to be a
rather embarrassing tiny solder bridge between pins 2 and 3 of J3 (I think -
it's the output connector from the SSB module).  I'm still not clear on how
I heard anything at all before fixing that, but in any case, tracing an
injected signal with an oscilloscope made short work of the search...

I did notice, before finding this, that touching some components (including
that transistor you mentioned, I think) or clipping in certain test
equipment would improve my gain substantially.

I got unreliable results out of the RF probe, but I followed their signal
tracing steps using an oscilloscope instead; if you have one available, it's
easy.
