I think the probe removal was being discussed before the PA option was
introduced and in the field.

Anyway, it is good engineering practice to never operate equipment in normal
use with test probes hanging off test points.   That even goes back to the
old BC 1335 10m FM transceiver of WW2.  It has an internal test probe used
during tune up then unplugged.

The BFO signal was always there, just gets an antenna in the form of a
plugged in probe.  With the amp, the signal can sneak into the amplified
path and exceed the limit as an artifact of 100 watt amplification.

Probably a key word search of list archives can establish the earliest
"probe thread".
