[Elecraft] KIO2 Test anomoly?

Folks,

The first test of the KIO2 communication functionality, From
Page 14 of the KIO2 Manual, is:

"If a K2-compatible application program is not available, you can
test the serial interface using a terminal program such as
Hyperterminal, as follows:"

... <setup/radio control instruction deleted>

"3. Tap DISPLAY to send a test message from the K2 to the
computer. The string FA000xxxxxxxx; should be seen in the
terminal program window, where xxxxxxxx is the present VFO A
frequency in Hz. (The first "x" will be 0 if VFO A is set to
    a frequency below 10 MHz.)"

...

I was never able to make this test work. However THE KIO2 WORKS
FINE, tested by interacting with the radio, via Hyperterminal,
using I/O commands documented in the Elecraft KIO2 Programmer's
Reference.

Is there a manual errata I missed? It seems to me that the test
above should NOT work. Consider this, taken from the programmers
ref. manual, "meta command section":

"AI (Auto-info mode): The AI meta-command controls how and when
the K2 responds to commands:

0. No Auto-info: __THIS IS THE DEFAULT__. No radio information
will be automatically reported. (You can still request
   specific information using GET commands.)"

So if the default is no Auto-info reporting, it seems the test
above should not work.

?!?!?!?!? :-)
