> 1 - Why are Bird meters so well regarded?

Been around a long while, rugged, dependable, accurate...

> 2 - Are they still manufactured?

Yes... in many forms and specifications.

> 3 - What is a slug?

The actual pick-up mechanism that grabs the RF. Looks like a small can....
They are made in many power levels and frequency ranges.

> 4 - Will they measure QRP levels? If so, better than OHR meter?

No... not stock. I think for HF the lowest ranging slug is 50 watts.... 5%
full scale accuracy... 8% if a peak reading model meter.

> 5 - What would be the recommended slugs, specific meter (if there is more
than one model), and accessories for measuring milliwatts up to 100 watts.

NA except I have seen HF custom slugs with 1 watt and 2.5 watts full
scale... they are unobtainable from the mfgr.

> 6 - What would be a reasonable price range to pay for the above?

Used Bird 43's seem to sell for abt $200-$250

> 7 - What would be the most common problem to look out for when shopping
for a used meter?

Physical damage and broken parts....
