Hi Bruce,
List members correct me if I am wrong.
To sum all messages up in a nut shell:
Elecraft K1 and K2 radios are excellent kits.
The K2 has been reborn into Rev B boards ( the past boards being Rev XC
and A), including all the modifications approved by Elecraft; some
suggested by the customers, others by Elecraft personnel; to improve the
performance of the radio. New mods or corrections to grammar in the
manuals are provided when you buy your kit of choice, as Errata sheets.
These corrections must be made before you heat your solder up. Other bits
of information that you might need to know while building the K1/K2 or
troubleshooting them, can be answered on this list, or if you are just
wanting to get revved up to get yourself a kit.
Soldering is easy if you have the right tools and the 'know how'.
Manuals are easy to read, just don't skip ahead, take it slowly.
Alignment is easy, because most test equipment is covered by the K1/K2's
firmware in their chips and self-made tools according to the manuals.
Don't build the radio if you are in a rush or tired, or you will make
mistakes. Make sure to use a small iron tip at all costs. And the right
type of solder. If you don't know how to solder or don't want to you can
have one of Elecraft's customer volunteer builders do it for you.
If you mess up on a part, Elecraft will send you a quick replacement. Of
course too many replacements is expensive, as I have learned.
