Back in the "old days" guys would make finals out of 6L6s inverted in
a pan of water or even transformer oil and wire up as many in parallel
as they could manage - this was usually on 160 meters.

The caution was to avoid holding the key down too long or the water
would start bubbling from the heat rise!

No, I was referring to the use of substantial amounts of r-f
clipping - 15 dB or more - which can really place a burden on the
final amp unless it is designed for continuous operation at that
higher average power level. Clipping both raises the average power -
as much as 10 dB or more - and can increase the duty cycle of speech
to the point of being almost a key-down situation.
