Although an AF notch filter can be made very sharp, the big disadvantage is that
it must be outside the AGC loop.  So a strong carrier (or whatever) near the
desired signal will continue to reduce the receiver's gain even when it's
notched.  It can still be somewhat useful, but you have to reduce RF gain and/or
turn off the AGC to get the benefit.

I almost never wish I had a notch filter, but I'm a CW operator and maybe it's
more useful for SSB.
