I guess it is a matter of personal style. I have my filters set for
1000, 700, 400, and 250. I use the wide filters regularly: While tuning
around to check out the band action, less likely to tune past weak
stations; When monitoring a frequency such as 14060, more likely to hear
an off-frequency station. I also use the wide setting in a contest or
sprint while CQing. I catch a few off-frequency stations that way, quite
handy.

I'll switch to the narrow BWs when engaged in a longer QSO, or listening
to a DX station while trying to break the pileup.
