[Elecraft] k2 is idiot proof at least somewhat

There's NOTHING wrong with operating that way Gary.
I do it most of the time.
What you did by using the RF Gain was over-ride the AGC, so it wasn't
pumping up the band noise to full volume when there wasn't a strong
signal in the bandpass. Personally, I do NOT like that. I prefer to hear
the bands as they are, with the noise level down where it belongs
(hopefully - granting no loud RFI sources turned on in the area).
Also, the K2 can deal with very strong signals when operating that way.
But the K2 is so robust that it takes a humungous signal to cause it
trouble, so that's not so important.
But doing that does NOT interfere with the ability of the rig to "dig
out" the weak ones, provided you remember to turn up the gain to hear
them!
Indeed, if you ever use less well-designed receiver, that's the better
way to operate it - audio gain up to the point where you start to hear
the audio channel noise, then use the r-f gain for volume control. You
can often hear signals weak signals that get lost in the racket on other
rigs.

Had been wondering why the bands seemed a bit quieter during the last
couple of weeks. ...Suddenly, voila, it came to me. Had been running
the rig with the af gain all the way up, and using the rf gain for audio
volume control.
