I generally sort components into "bug cage" drawers: chips,
transistors and diodes, random capacitors, electrolytics, xtals, hardware,
connectors, inductors, etc. Large groups of same valued items are kept in
small zip-locks or envelopes. For caps that come in small groups, I
pre-sort and then push a series of grouped values into anti-static chip
foam. Such forests of values will generally free-stand on the bench for
easy inspection while building, and will fit on their sides in the bug
cages at night. Resistors are easy enough to identify w/out sorting
(though your eyes may vary :). For bulk resistors in my "junk box", I
sort them into cages by order of magnitude. Same with bulk caps.
